Frequently Asked Questions about D&T 1-2-1 Work

Got questions?

GOOD!

Here are the answers to the most common questions, but please do make contact if something isn't clear.

How long does Drawing & Talking last?

Each session is 30 minutes, there are 12 sessions to complete the intervention.

Do I need to do all 12 weeks?

12 weeks is required to allow a therapeutic alliance to form (trust), and to allow you to progress through the three stages of the intervention.  The certainty of 12 weeks also allows a safe attachment and detachment from the practitioner.

What do I draw?

You can draw whatever you like, and talk about whatever you like - it is your session.

If you are really stuck, I can guide you on what to draw.

You will be given a new sheet of paper in each session.

Can I use colours?

Drawing and Talking uses plain white A4 paper and a standard pencil only.

What happens to my drawings?

I will keep them safe in your personal folder, you can look at them in any session.  At the end of the final session I will give you your folder, you can do whatever you want with it, and choose to share your drawings or not.

What will we talk about?

You can talk about whatever you want - it is your session.

Adults in particular, may feel that they know what trauma it is that they want to discuss, but I would advise to be flexible and go with the flow.

I may ask questions about your drawing, I may encourage you to explore the fantasy world you have drawn, this allows you to delve into emotions in a less personal way - be prepared to play!

Who is Drawing & Talking suitable for?

•Anyone who is able and willing to draw in pencil (suggested 5yrs +) and who can talk (but suitable for people with communication difficulties too)

•Anyone who has experienced any kind of trauma, that is getting in the way

•Children and adults

•Anyone on a long waiting list for other therapy / counselling services

Who is it NOT suitable for?

•A child under 5 or anyone who cannot use a pencil

•Anyone who is currently being seen (incl virtually) by a therapist or counsellor (conflict of therapeutic allegiance)

What is the commitment?

•30 minute session at same place and time each week for 12 weeks – just draw and talk!

•I can accommodate holidays – don't worry!

•12 weeks is important to allow the whole process to complete.

•Parents / partners / teachers / friends please note this is not a quick fix, dealing with trauma is hard (that’s why we bury it) so it may be a bumpy ride, but stick with it to feel the long term benefits.
