Frequently Asked Questions about Directed Group Work
Got questions?
GOOD!
Here are the answers to the most common questions, but please do make contact if something isn't clear.
How long does Drawing & Talking last?
Each session is 45-60 minutes, there are 5-8 sessions in the programme.
Do I need to attend every session?
I ask all participants to commit to the whole programme, this is because of the Attachment Element of the technique, and how everyone gets the most from the programme. But LIFE HAPPENS, if you can't make a week, no-one will be mad!
What will I draw?
Each week I will introduce a new theme, for you to draw in any way you choose. It is your personal creative and symbolic work.
What will we talk about?
As a group, you will talk about the pictures you have created, taking it in turns.
Do I have to talk?
Everybody has the opportunity to PASS. If you don't feel confident or do not have anything to say, that is fine. I find most attendees grow in confidence as the weeks progress.
Can I use colours?
In this group work you CAN use colours, I usually have the following materials available in addition to your A4 plain paper & standard pencil;
- Felt-tips (with thick and thin ends)
- Colouring Pencils
- Wax Crayons
- Shading Pencils
- Rubbers, Sharpeners & Scissors
Do I have to share my artwork?
Everybody has the opportunity to PASS. If you don't feel confident to show or talk about your picture, that is fine. I find most attendees grow in confidence as the weeks progress.
What happens to my drawings?
I will keep them safe in your personal folder, you can look at them in any session. At the end of the final session I will give you your folder, you can do whatever you want with it, and choose to share your drawings or not with people from outside of the group
What if I get emotional or triggered during the session?
Your safety and comfort is my priority. Most venues have a break-out area available, so you can take a breather. I also always have tissues with me. Often when I lead sessions for other organisations there will be a member of their team there to offer support, when I am on my own, I will check in on you and give you the opportunity to chat with me at the end. You can return to the main session at any time.
